Job opening: Driver

We are looking for an experienced, flexible and service-minded driver to join our team at the Belgian Embassy in Washington, DC. They will serve under the supervision of the Ambassador and the Head of Administration.

Position                           Driver (full-time – 40 hrs/wk)

Job Description (Tasks and Duties) 

  • Serve as official driver of the Embassy;
  • Provide secure and professional transportation to the Ambassador, Embassy staff, Dignitaries and visitors, in a proactive and timely manner;
  • Operate official vehicles in a safe and effective manner according to the US traffic laws and regulations;
  • Ensure that the vehicles are clean and fit to drive and that the registrations and insurances are up to date;
  • Coordinate periodic servicing and monitor mechanical repairs by dealers or automotive service centers;
  • Carry out deliveries within the DC metro area;
  • Occasionally assist in the set-up of events and help during events;
  • Occasionally help move furniture and parcels, assist with receiving deliveries;
  • Occasionally assist with office and/or residences’ maintenance tasks and repairs;
  • Other ad-hoc administrative tasks related to the smooth running of the Embassy in general;
  • The job description may evolve in accordance with the needs of the Embassy;
  • Full compliance with Embassy transport policy.

Conditions of Employment (Compensation and Benefits)

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, a Legal Permanent Resident (green card), or have an A-1 or A-2 visa with an Employment Authorization Document;
  • Gross monthly salary: $4,001 – $5,473. The gross salary range depends on the recognition of relevant and verified employment experience. Overtime compensation is paid according to U.S. regulations;
  • A one-year contract, with the possibility of a permanent contract afterwards. Contracts are governed by U.S. labor laws;
  • 24 days of paid annual leave, in addition to 14 official holidays;
  • Top-notch health insurance (Medical, Dental and Vision), with 85% employer’s contribution;
  • Disability insurance;
  • A desirable international work environment with short communication channels and few hierarchical levels.

Please note that the Embassy does not withhold taxes at source, therefore the successful candidate is responsible for all taxes including social security contributions when applicable.

Requirements (Required qualifications)

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a chauffeur position, impeccable driving record and clean license;
  • Must have very high degree of punctuality, confidentiality, integrity and trustworthiness;
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends;
  • Willingness to be flexible when required and to take time off to balance this out when not so busy;
  • Good organizational skills and flexibility with regard to program changes and working patterns;
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure, take initiative and organize own work;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with people at all levels, ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to present oneself professionally and appropriately in demeanor and dress, particularly during the visit of High-Level Delegations;
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Outlook, Smartphone use and navigation app’s;
  • Professional working proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Assets

  • Knowledge of the DC Metro area;
  • Experience driving Diplomatic, Military or Senior personnel;
  • Knowledge and experience of the Diplomatic community in DC.

Working patterns

  • Some driving duties may require the driver to make an early start or late finish so there will be the option of flexible start/finish times to accommodate this;
  • May occasionally be required to travel locally for business.
